Final Answer

Peter said to Jesus that he would build three tents, one for Jesus, another for Moses, and the other for Elijah on the mount of Transfiguration. Why did he say that? The answers you all gave is correct. Peter was so afraid of what he was seeing. Imagine, he just saw two people, Moses and Elijah, who have been dead for many years ago were talking with Jesus. You may say it like seeing ghost in modern term. Indeed, high on the mountain, in the middle of night where no one around except the three disciples (Peter, James and John), the rest were left behind. Remember the character of Peter? He was talk fast and think later type. So out of fear, he spoke to Jesus saying he would build three tents with nothing in his hands.

If you think that Peter like the view, may be not a good reason to live up there and forget about Jesus' ministry. Also if Peter understand Jesus' needs, he may not be asking this question either. Peter definitely desired to be a good disciple to Jesus, again by building tents and live up on the mountain is not exactly make him to be good. Hope you like this game. Play again. I think Elijah was taken alive into haven right? - 2 Kings 2. In 850 - 800 BC Elijah ascended "into heaven" in a "chariot of fire. Four centuries after that event, around 400 BC, Prophet Malachi (Malachi 4:5, the last book of OT) prophesied that Elijah will return from heaven before the coming of the Messiah (Jesus)! Jewish people take that literally - Matthew 17: 10-13. Even today, many Jewish people still hope to see second coming of Elijah. For them only after Malachi's prophesy is fulfilled , they will accept the one that come after Elijah as their true Messiah. So When Peter saw Elijah next to Jesus he was so afraid and so overjoyed that Jesus must be The One they all had been waiting for (not because he saw dead people). Just my school of thought :-)
