Jump in the Pool of Discussion

Tell me, when Jesus said to Peter and other disciples that they should bring weapon (Luke 22:38), did Jesus teach us "self Defense" lesson? Another word, can Christian practice self defense when God ask us to trust Him in every ways of our lives? Leave me your thoughts in comments section.

I think Jesus doesn't teach us to be "self Defense".

Philippians 1:27-28. Do not be frightened in any way by those who oppose you.
Matthew 10:28. Do not be afraid of those who can only take your life; that is, don't be afraid to die.

I'm not sure since as for me when someone attacked me I'll try to defense myself right away.. As a human being i think that an automatic reaction..isn't it?? I had never really taught about "Self defense" and "Christian" in a same sentence.. :D hehe

Good one Kelly. I am so impressed that you are answering with Bible verses. I like your answer but can you tackle more on the text that why Jesus asking about bringing weapon to disciples. Indeed, we know that by Peter’s answer where he said that he brought two swords. Jesus replied that it was enough. Tell me more...

Saya, I still can't understand why Jesus said to Peter and other disciples that they should bring weapons. Maybe it's a metaphor or one of the set up to show miracle, But Jesus doesn't teach Christian "Self Defense". I think :D

Since you got me interested in this topic I went on to read Luke Ch.22.

Luke (22 49-51) "When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him."

This verse show that when one of his disciples practice self defense Jesus stopped him. He even healed the one that tried to attacked him.

Self Defense and Being Christian.
I don't know how these two related. I think it’s ok to learn self defense as long as you are not violating. Especially when someone grab you, force you, or trying to kill you, will you just let it happen? I will try to defense and protect myself as much as possible.
Jesus said to his disciples “…if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” in Luke 22:36
If that was not teaching us self defense, I believe HE taught us how to be cautious and prepare for anything that can happen.
Now I want to know Saya’s explanation.

Wow! another strong lady speaking. Quite true that we are not suppose to, just standing and take the abuse from bad guy, without defending ourselves. Nway, but how can we reconcile the fact that the Christian should not be depending on self rather than depending on God. For example should I buy weapon to defense myself although I trusted in God that He will protect me?

Kelly said that Jesus did not teach self defense rather set up for miracle. It would be a little too much to asume that way. But good understanding though. However, infact, if Jesus knew ahead what would happen, then He should not even ask disciples to bring weapon in the beginning, isn't it? Then again, why Jesus sound like rebuking to Peter when he strike the enemy? Let's bring up more insights.

Saya ... I beg you to give us the answer ASAP ... Today ... Some of them came to me very personally (?) ... whether I do know your answer ... lol

Where is the rest? let's put some more thoughts to it. Just warming up for deeper discussion... Let's take some more time... I am excited and waiting for your thoughts...

I know the answer but I don't know why. Or rather, I don't know how I got this answer.

I am sure we have to do our best to defend ourselves. It is when we are helpless despite our best efforts that God intervenes.

Maybe Saya Lone Wah can teach us why... I just know we can't sit through life recklessly thinking God will save us every time.

There are Christians who don't take medicine because they say God will heal them. They still die.

Maybe it was God who sent the medicine to us but we didn't take it. LOL...

********Luke 22:38******
The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied.
********Luke 22:38*****

If Jesus was teaching self defense,
he would NOT say 2 swords is ENOUGH.
12 disciples need 12 swords to defense them self. Right???

john 18:10
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.

Mathew 26:52
"Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

So here's what i think Jesus wants his disciples and us to teach on Luke 22:38
When serving GOD or doing missionary....We have a long journey ahead of us. Some roads may rough and difficult to SURVIVE.
So use sword PROPERLY when needed. (For example: to find foods, cut wood for fire) :P :)
Not to kill people or fight.

Getting interesting! Lol
I am delighted by your thoughts… it came across in my mind that I got answer from you just like the story of “Eating a sugar cane”; should we eat it from the tip or from the bottom? And why? Remember that lesson in your school? Try some more…don’t be shy…
